If you should ever find yourself in that position again (where you spook an animal on the draw) don't stop, keep drawing back. Often times like you experienced they will hop a short ways and stop [8D]. This will offer a short window of opportunity for you to "send him a message".If he doesn't stop you still didn't lose anything....
