RE: Deer Vision QUESTIONS
Deer like humans have eyes that are made up of rods and cones. Rods are tall skinny cells that are very receptive to dim light. Deer have multiple times the amount ofrodsa human has and ahuman eye contains about 125 million rods each! These dim light receptive rods sense shades of gray. With deer having significantly more than humans you can see why deer see so well at night and see in shades of gray.
Cones are color receptor cellsthat come in blue, red and green. These color receptive cells are foundmuch less in a deer versus the 1 million each human eye contains. This explains why deer don't see colors very distinctly. As far as what deer see...shades of yellow and gray, yetvery well at night!
Deer as with many prey animalshave eyes placed on the sides of their head, which allows them to have a nearly 360 degree pattern of vision with asimple move of the neck left orright; also because of anatomic positioning of the eyes a deer's stationary fieldof view is much greater than a humans. They do see very well straight on as well inthier peripheral vision...
As for camo, this is one reasonwhy I have always felt its best to break up your outline versus having the perfect colors on your camo...
Good luck
