RE: 1911 .45's
I got a Springfield GI .45 this year and I really like it. I have had a Gold Cup Series 70 since 1982, and if I am careful I can shoot almost as well with the GI as with the Gold Cup. The trigger of course does not compare, nor do the sights, but the GI is inherently accurate if you can see the miserable little sights and can deal with the trigger.
I bought the GI because I wanted a "take anywhere" 1911. The WWII lok is way cool. It is very reasonably priced for what it is. I agree with others, however, that if you are looking for a target pistol you are better off buying an upgraded model to start with.
