You handled it well and we can all learn from your conversation! It would not surprise me to hear in the next few weeks that you received persmission from your neighbor.
Perhaps he wanted to get to know you as a person and not a hunter. basically, he wants to know you are ethical, decent guy and not some yahoo out there.
You did all you could and I bet you left him with an excellent perception of you.
