Interesting. This is the way I've always been told to do it. I've basically trained two setters this way. But I've always let them run/chase birds first until they would want to chase birds rather then play. When I introduce the gun, they are totally focused upon chasing/getting that bird.
I don't doubt you but wouldn't the dog be smart enough to know where the sound is comming from? Perhaps, these dogs you corrected was from owners who tooked their dogs out for the first time then shot over them? I would be interested to know and in which situation you shouldn't do the chase-shootmethod.
