I used a brand different from "No Stinkin Bugs" this year that is in a smaller pump spray bottle, no aerosol. It too had the earth cover scent in it and to me it smelled like freshly turned or kicked up forest soil, although I think I can smell the deet in it too.

As for the deer, the first day I used it, I had a doe and her two fawns walk right under and around my tree stand browsing for about 3-4 minutes and they gave no sign of catching any offensive scent.

The second time I used it, this past Sunday, I got my buck even though he approached down wind of me, up slope of a ridge I was hunting (the wind was blowing east to west and up the slope with occasional swirls). He laid down 35 yards from me for a while, still down wind but to the side a little, and never gave any indication that he smelled anything disturbing.

I wish I could think of the brand's name, but its at home and I'm not. When I get home I'll check and edit this post.
