Curiosity scent.
I know folks who use a drag rag covered in vanilla extract during the early season to bring in deer.
As long as they aren't feeling threatened by it or don't associate the scent with danger, they'll follow it.
I knew a guy who baited deer for a long time. Every time he went to bait the deer he would cover himself on Old Spice cologne. He would bait the deer all summer wearing this cologne. About a week before the season opened he would stop baiting the deer completely. Then opening day he would go sit in a stand over his old bait site, only he would throw out cotton balls covered in Old Spice. The deer associated the smell of the Old Spice with food, so when they smelled the cologne they came in for a snack.
