Default what do you set your bow at?

i hear talk from a guy at a archery shop in hanson MA. that their is no need to set your bow at 70lbs. he says 50lbs is really all you need for shots out to 30yds.
my cousins husband said last year he has his set at 47lbs and he takes 3 deer a year during the maine hunting season.
i have no problems pulling back a bow that is 70lbs but is there really a need for 70lbs?
