As stated, I have a 1/3 of a mile walk back to my stand across open field. The deer leave another property, cross the road and head across the open field to our timber.
This is an unlikely scenerio for every day. I WOULD suspect the guy is telling you like it is, the buck will cross from brush to brush 99 percent of the time. They don't usually expose themselves to walking across a wide open field during daylight hours near a road. The deer probably DO prefer to cross near your truck. In fact, you've said you've seen them do it all the time. You might be better off parking the other side of the field, walking down the road and hunt the trail crossing closer to the road. Much easier to pin them down where they're restricted.
