RE: red dot vs. scope vs. open sights
There are a couple of companies that make a 4 power scope with a 40mm plus objective lens. I would try to look at a few of them at your local sporting goods store and see which one you liked the best. In the power range of the 30-30 (under 200 yards) you will be well served by the four power scope.
