Don't forget the fiber content. Generally speaking, if it does not have at least 4% crude fiber, there will be more softer messy stools. When you get above 4% and into the 6% range, the increased fiber binds the stools better and you get nice hardstool that is easy to pick up and keep the kennel clean.
Up here, the Royal Canin stuff is just outrageously expensive. Well over $1 per pound. Purina ProPlan is just as expensive. Eagle Pack and Natural Choice are around .$75 per pound. The Nutro products and Diamond are about $.45 per pound.
