You know being an old man I had to think a long time on this one, I have been very lucky and somewhat anal about double checking stuff so my dumbness is not due to forgetting something. Well I was 13 and my dad had just bought me a new 12 gauge, well everyone knows it must be shot as soon as possible or the gun will catch on fire and burn down the house! So I immediatly went out to shoot something, of course nothing was in season that was edible so my choice of prey was very limited. At last I saw my prey, Mr. Crow flying straight towards me at about an altitude of 30 yards max, I swung the gun higher and higher and then slapped the trigger, I saw stars and felt great pain right below my eye and my shoulder and it felt like my index finger was torn off!!!! Of course when you shoot a 12 gauge when it is about 6 inches off your shoulder things like they happen. Black eye, bruised shoulder and a sprained cut finger, yea that was dumb!
