Anybody in this forum hunt Chamois?
I do, but not regularly. (maybe 4-5 times a year.)
Shot two last week. (8 1/2 inch & 9 1/4 inch.)
Spotted them while on a spring deer hunt. (It's spring here in the southern hemisphere.) and I was out looking for venison for the freezer.
Stalked through bush adjoining a slip where they were feeding, in order to get closer. Got within 300 yards, in meanwhile the first buck I'd spotted had moved out of sight, spotted a second animal, but a long shot. Took the shot (7mm-08) and broke the animals spine, it tumbled about 150 yards down a cliff face and got caught by the back leg in some trees. I had to climb across the face to retreive, as I climbed, the first animal poked his head over the top of the cliff above to see what the fuss was about. Took the shot, almost vertical and not much to hold onto, at about 120 yards and dropped him with a neck shot, unfortunately he didn't keel forward over the cliff and down to me, but dropped where he was hit on a small ledge about 2 feet wide.
First had to get the first animal shot, and finish it off, then a tricky climb up to number two, his horns were quite good so didn't want to push him over the cliff to someplace where skinning would be easier, for fear of busting up the horns. Decided to headskin on the ledge, not a lot of fun with only 2 feet wide of space to operate in, and getting dark. Took the headskin down. Returned the next day to retreive number one.
So managed to get two heads, one headskin, one full skin and majority of meat, down off the mountain and two hours walk out to my boat.
Skins were still in full winter pelt, so very attractive.
Chamois are about the size of a Whitetail deer and live in mountainous areas, are extremely quick witted (Sharp eyes, ears and scent.) a real challenge to hunt. They are from the antelope family.
