The legendary 30-30 is a short range cartridge that many people try to eek out to 200 yards. It's effective range is
maybe about 150 yards at best.
You didn't say if you have a scope on the 30-30 or not. Some people scope them, some don't. Some actually think
"putting a scope on a lever gun is like putting combat boots on a ballerina" - that quote still cracks me up!
I have my Marlin 30AS sighted at 1/2" high at 50 and I'm dead on at 100, and I leave it there. I use Remington Core Lokt 170gr rounds, which my Marlin seems to prefer.
Keep the ol' 30-30 simple and out to about 100 yards and you'll be fine. Good luck this season!
