Default RE: Puppy questions

I had a pointer puppy that cried during walks. Strange behavior. I gave up thatpup - only had him for a week, and got a setter pup soon after. I would suggest you socialize him. Get him out to places with alot of people. Better yet get him out to places with alot of other young dogs. My pup is well socialized so when I take her to the field alone, she runs fine no matter where. She was afraid of busses so I took her to a Park and Ride (Bus station) so she could watch the people get off. Now, she doesn't even blink when a bus comes by. Like the DVD says, a socialized pup is a very trainable pup.

Concerning the biting, use the water bottle. I wouldn't use the newspaper roll. Don't pick him up as much as need be. Picking him up lets your arms nearby. And don't grab his head suddenly. That is like tug of war, it lets him be aggressive. Make sure there are toys around him. When he starts biting, squirt him and tell him 'No' (some don't like 'No' because it sounds like 'Whoa') then praise him when he stops. Then let him play with a toy. He's teething and it itches. He bites because new teeth a breaking through his gums. My puppy just lost her baby teeth at 5 months old and she has calm down considerably. She still likes playing but I let her play with other dogs at the dog park.

Another thing, sit is not that important for pointing dogs as much as woah. You don't want the dog to sit when you want him holding point and you say "Woah". A simple thing I've been doing. At feeding time, I 'Woah' her. When she complies, I blow two hoots of the whisle and let her eat. She's catching on real quick. She already knows to come when I blow the whistle now after 2 days of using it. I'm using the command lead to prepare for Heel and 'Woah'ing her every so often. Commands she knows are, Come, Down (off the furniture), Who's that? (I didn'trealize I taught her that but she immediately runs to the door to find out who is here), and currently working on Woah. She is only five months but she learns quickly and seems more mature.
