RE: Grinding Pyrodex/Triple 7
Last winterI bought some powder called Pinnacle. It was rumored that it could be used in flintlocks and also as a primer. I bought the FFFg grade. I tried the Pinnacle in the T/C Hawkins Flintlock that has a very fast ignition. In the rifle I discovered that it would fire but could not be depended on to fire consistently. I then thought that perhaps grinding the FFFg to a finer consistency would produce better ignition. So I ground it on a glass plate with a wooden spoon to a fine powder. For safety reasons I ground only a very small amount at a time. I took that fine ground Pinnacle and then used that as a primer powder. What I discovered was again, it would fire the powder but it was not dependable.
To make it dependable I did a duplex load of Goex 4f in the bore with the Pinnacle on top and then used Goex 4f in the pan. With this I had much better results.
I really think if you were to grind Pyrodex or Triple Se7en you would not be satisfied with the results. It is just hard to beat good old Goex in the flintlocks.
