If you had it in your power to bring back one of the old (or not so old) calibers which is now out of favor with the buying public, which would you choose and which gun would you couple it with?
I think I'd choose the 348 Winchester and put it in a Savage 99 with a light maple stock..... top it off with a Weaver 4x. That would make for a nice "eastern" deer rifle out to about 200 yards.
You'd have a devil of a time putting a .348 in the M99 Savage! It just won't fit!! Nor wwill that big, fat tapered case fit in any of the small handy lever actions! The reason why it was put in the M71 is that the Model 1886 action was the only one that could handle the big case!!
Now, why not make your Model 99 a .358 instead? This is a much better cartridge than the .348, being able to launch a pointed 250-grain bullet at over 2400 FPS..... Better yet, buy a BLR in .358! The BLR will stand loads up to the level of a bolt-action, and is extremely accurate to boot. In other words, what you want is stillavailable today from Browning!
