RE: Mock Scrapes....Are They Effective?
I made a few mock scrapes last year. On one of them, I hung a scent dripper bag over it and watched as a nice buck came in to investigate about ten minutes before legal shooting time on opening morning of shotgun season. I slipped the safety off and instantly, he took off into a thicket. You only get one shot where I hunt as the trees are so thick and I didn't want to have slugs bouncing off the trees or rocks.
I plan to try the scrapes and dripper again during bow season this year. I don't think it will hurt and I don't think it will draw them in from miles away, but I do think it may get them to investigage if they are in the area. I guess the theory on the scent drip bag is that it is supposed to drip on the scrape during the day and not at night so bucks will come to visit it during the day to see who is leaving the scent. I can't vouch for if that really works however. I guess it would all depend on the situation - does to bucks ratioand the corresponding pressure to fight and breed.
