RE: 150g vs 170g 30-30 performance on deer
I have both a Marlin 336 RC and a Winchester Model 94, I dont use the Marlin much because it was passed down from my grandfather before he died and i want to keep it in great shape. I have used the old model 94 for years and taken many, many deer with it. I have taken deer from 5 yards to over 130 with it successfully. I have also tried several diffrent rounds over the years including. Federal Power shocks, PMC flat points, Winchester Power Points, Remington Core Lokt hollow points and Core Lokt round nose soft points. By far the 170 grain Core Lokts out perform all the rest. I have tried both 150 grain and 170 and the 170 do soooo much better. I have never been able to get the 150's to shoot as well. It is hard to beat the Rem. 170 gr. Core Lokts. I had a friend who used to hand load 125 pointed hollow points in his 30-30, you could only load one at a time because of the pointed bullets coming in contact with the primer of the shell in front of it. But the little 125's shot good and he took alot of deer. Good luck finding the round that shoots best out of your gun and happy hunting, you will soon find out why the old 30-30 has been around so long and still popular in the deer woods.
