RE: Best all around whitetail deer caliber??
In our group that hunts together in Wisconsin, you see 2 main calibers-7mm-08 and .270 Win. Both are excellent. I myself wield the Remington 700 Mountain DM, great gun, not too small, not too big. It swings nice, i've taken deer out to 250 yards with it, it's got a Leupold Vari X II 3-9X scope. The detachable magazine is a great feature, you can just pop a clip in instead of carrying around loose shells. Loaded with a Hornady 130 grain Interbond, you can't go wrong.
7mm-08 with 140 grain bullets should do the job. Great little gun if you want some to walk with. I dunno about it's ability to hold power at range, but i've seen alot of deer shot with it.
.30-06 and .280 also I highly recommend. The .280 is basically more powerful .270. What's there to say about the .30-06 that hasn't been said already? it speaks for itself.
7mm Mag is a good caliber too. i really think the .30 Magnums are too much gun. Even at range. It's all about shot placement. Having all that energy at ultra long range does nothing if you can't hit the deer.
