I would try to make whatever sound I just made blend in with something you might normally hear, and the elk might be accostomed to. Just because there is a noise, doesn't mean the hunt is over. Also might just try sitting perfectly still and not making any more noises and see if the guy could cool down and relax, then start working him however I was working him again.
