The 308 is pretty hard to find any negatives for, bullet selection from 125 to 180 gr to fit just about any hunting situation. Comes in a short action gun which means a lighter gun, ammo is available just about anywhere. It pretty much duplicates 06 velocities up to 165 gr loads, ( factory ammo that is). Other cartridges to consider are the 30-06, 270, 7mm-08,280. I sounds like this is going to be your first gun. Don't know how much your looking to spend, but if your on a budget look at Savage or Howa,I would suggest the 308 or 30-06and get the best glass you can afford.
