The decision doesn't have to be irreversable. Go check it out, you may decide to stay or not. It may open opportunities for the family that they might not otherwise have--Your dad may have a couple of great hunting/fishing trips to Alaska that he wouldn't other wise have. I expect Alaska would be a great place to live, but check out everthing: cost of living vs. income, weather, transportation, crime, the whole works.
