JC, welcome to the board. I'm afraid I'm too far north to meet up with you, but I might suggest that you and your son go to the skeet range on a weekday afternoon. Weekdays are better because you stay out of the crowds, but call ahead and make sure there isn't a league shooting that night. Find a field with an experienced puller who can tell you where you're missing and what to do about it, and I would suggest two rounds for each of you. (50 targets) My first guess would be that you aren't following thru on your swing and shooting behind the birds. Explain your situation to the person behind the counter. That way they can put you on a field with good help. Improving your skills will really help you enjoy your hunting, but it will probably take a few trips to the range. Good luck.
