I have been using a BAR LWT in 30-06 fot the past two years and have had no problems at all . I also have a couple of steel reciever safari models. The lioght weights are accurate and handle any thing I put in them. I just check the sight in and go hunting my last two bucks were taken at 240 and 262 yds the rifle has a 2x7 leaupold. The bolt lugs lock into the the bbl not the reciever. Works for me and I understand your concerns I had the same thoughts myself before I bought one.
