i have a schrade with a gut hook and a wyoming knife. i think the gut hook is very helpful. i have yet to have a problem with it getting in the way. i would recommend that if you do get one with the open hook that you be careful while you are cutting connective tissue in the body cavity. with the wyoming knife you don't have to worry about the gut hook catching on anything, but you are restricted to a shorter cutting blade.
