Default RE: Help! Best boots for OCT N.M Elk Hunt??

DOUBLE DITTO on Highpowers recs. I wont get into brand specifics, but a 400-500gram boot is about perfect for NM in Oct. When I hunted in the Gila and Apache areas in mid Oct my 500gram boots were between perfect and a touch on the warm side. But that is further south and a lil lower and warmer than the Chama area. I can't emphasize enough how important socks are. You can take quality socks and improve questionable boots. THE most important is the material of the liner or innersock that is touching your skin. I buy only "Thermax type" liners that wick moisture and keep your feet dry. A dry foot wont blister and can withstand much colder temps before discomfort.

Another thing you might consider (if space permits) is some portable "drop in" boot dryers. For sure take a bottle of quality foot powder and if you dont have power for the dryers then carry some newspaper to place in the boots at night. A dry boot is a luxury and it will actually add years too the life of your boots (and aint bad on the feet either!).

Good luck and have a ball, there aint NUTTIN like chasin bugles in NM (well not outside of AZ anyway! )
