First, next time try and clean of as much flesh/meat as possible. Try using a wire brush to clean out between the quills.

Second, that should be long enough time if the tail is fanned out and locked in that position you can putbondo on both sides of the tail and that will protect it from any bugs and keep it together for as long as you have it.
