I've been using DeLorme's Topo 5.0 to map my favorite spots. You can download then layer on USGS quads, sat images, or aerial photos of your favorite spots, then look at them in 3D. I also try to get as many photos as I can when scouting and GPS where I took them then load the GPS points to the maps then link the photos to them.
