Default RE: Oil in the barrel /will it cause misfires?

Next time you go to the range Chuck take a long a small spray bottle of windshield washer fluid and isopropyl alcohol 50/50 mix and a bunch of cleaning patches. Make sure you clean your rifle with a patch or two before you start shooting to get out the oils. Then load and shoot your gun like you were doing.

After the shot, you can take a patch and wet it with the swabbing solution of alcohol and windshield washer fluid you brought and swab the barrel somewhat clean of fowling. You do not have to clean the barrel between shots. The reason we swab the barrel is to make all shooting conditions somewhat equal from shot to shot and to help the next shot load easier. As long as you swab the barrel you could have stayed out there all day, shooting and swabbing the barrel.

Some people (I do depending on how hard the projectile is loading) will swab every third shot. After you have shot about 10 rounds take your breech plug wrench and give the breech plug a turn back and fourth. This will make sure the breech is not seizing up the plug. Swab the barrel and keep shooting. There is no need to break the gun down and clean it unless you have some real bad fowling problems and the rifle is acting up. I do one wet patch and then two dry patches when I swab.

I shot off over 40 rounds from one rifle at the range at one sitting. Swabbing does another thing on hot days. Your barrel will get hot when shooting and sometimes needs time to cool. Some rifles really throw rounds all over when the barrel gets hot. I often times will take out three rifles and shoot each of them in turn, giving the others time to cool down in the shade between shots. So swabbing just kind of slows you down a little besides cleaning the gunk out of the barrel, giving it time to cool down.

By the way, how did the rifle shoot?
