Average markup at many local shops is between 30 and 40 percent. More than that and I would question it as well. Even with an average markup of about 35% that is still very comparable to what you would find at a place like Cabelas. In some cases the small guy may take a bigger hit because of such things as shipping costs on some items and he, in turn, has to pass that on to the consumer.
