Some really FUNNY stories, thanks!
I don't know if embarrassing is really the right adjective to describe it, but I hate telling the story. I'd been bowhunting in a spot that used to be great, but had turned south, yet I wasn't quick enough to realize it. One evening, about mid-season, A big, fat raccoon came down the hedgerow. I'd been trapping coon that year, and hadn't seen a deer, so I figured why not take it? I let it get close, too close. I ended up shooting almost straight down. Well... I hit it alright, the arrow hit dead center and pinned it right to the ground. If you've ever heard a coon "squall" you can imagine what happened next. That coon started screaching for all it had,... what an awful sound. The worst of it was, he was running in circles around the arrow shaft the whole time. I hadn't expected the reaction from the shot. Even though it was fatal, a coon is a strong animal, and I shot again and missed the spinning coon, I shot again and ended the ordeal, double pinning it with two arrows.
After that was over, I was a bit shaken from the surprise of the situation. I looked behind me and of course there was a good buck, that had to check out what all the commotion was! I tried to get get into position to get a shot off, but spooked him off.
When I got back to camp, the three other hunters that night were all talking about "that awful screeching sound" they had heard, and What? could it be. Some of them were 1/2 mile from my position!. I wished I hadn't, but explained what happened. They never let me forget it.
My advice..... Do not shoot a coon staight down with an arrow, its not a pretty picture.
