You might also try using a soldering or wood burning iron. Get it hot and then hold it close to but not touching the fiber optic material. You'll get it to melt this way without burning and dis-coloring the fiber. You could also heat a piece of wire over the stove burner or propane torch and use it like a soldering iron. Close but NOT touching
