We get them up to twenty four pounds but the average is about 4-8 pounds. They have a piece of bone on each side above the cheek with a letter L on it. When I was a kid we called them lucky stones and always cut them out when we caught sheepshead. They are white like ivory and are about the size of a quarter with a distinct L on one side. We always caught them with worms while fishing on the bottom in rivers. Big fight when you get a good one. We ate one when I was a kid but I don't think it was all that great.
