Well i screwed up, i had one in range that i didnt see, i was too focused on the one just out of range and trying to get him in, they saw me and busted me, stayed out there from noon to 7 and only saw hens and one lone tiny jake on the property after the toms busted me

RE: Team 10 Thread
Went out this morning for the opener. Had a jake in my lap about 5 minutes after fly down. I let him walk on. Moved up the ridge and called a tom to 70 yards and couldn't get him any close. He walked away, went back to his ridge and started gobbling. I walked away too, had to go to work. Work sure messes up some good hunting.lol I will try again in the morning.

RE: Team 10 Thread
Nice birds DTC! Well i went out saturday, set up about a half mile away from my dad, at 7:02 almost exactly an hour after i heard the first gobble i hear a shot and my dad got the first bird of the season, the tom maybe weighed in at 17lbs, but had a 7" beard and 3/4" spurs
|
RE: Team 10 Thread

|
RE: Team 10 Thread
Nice bird!!
Weather is making it very difficult here in Michigan! Let two jakes walk this morning. Had a gobbler hang up on me yesterday at 50 yds.. Soon enough, my time will come! |
RE: Team 10 Thread
MO. Eastern down!!! Score on it is 63.
Had to work on Monday the opener, yesterday, had nothing near me. This morning I was gonna hunt my neighbors property across the road from my lower gate. But when I got to the gate and opened it, to park on my property, the birds were allready thundering on my big ridge. Change of plans!!!:D I grabbed my gear and headed for my food plot, got set up, and waited for daylight. I had the whole ridge side facing me, all they had to do was walk in. Well it didn't go as planned. The boss came in with a hen, and he was 1/2 way up the face of the ridge, wayyyyy too far for a shot, and he wasn't interested in my deeks to say the least. After messing with him for over 1/2 hour, he dissapeared up over the top of the ridge, thundering as he went! I knew where he was going tho. To my hidden pasture on the east side of my property. So I packed up and headed the long way around the ridge, keeping a good distance between us, and got to my hidden pasture, There is a small group of trees there, and a good spot to ambush him. As I arrived, I started setting up again, and gave a quick couple of clucks with my mouth piece, and he thundered back. I now knew he was below me in the valley, so I sat down quickly, and gave a couple more clucks on the diaphram. He thundered again, then I pulled out my slate and purred, the responded again. So I shut up, sat back and waited. About 45 minutes later, I was wondered if he gave up on me, so I took off my hat, facemask, gloves, and was munching on some trailmix, when I saw his fan comeing. I scrambled to get my hat and mask on, spit my food out of my mouth, and put in the mouth call, and got the gun up, he turned broadside, spitting and drumming in full strut! I kelked at him, and he stuck his head out a little, and I dropped the hammer on him! Lights outs! He ended up being 22lbs, 9 1/4 inch beard, and 1 1/8 spurs. Didn't break my personal best, but still a memrable hunt none the less!!![8D] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
RE: Team 10 Thread
I hear ya!!! Keep em coming guys, we got some ground to make up! I'm still trying, but bogged down with school work and finals coming up. I will, however, be able to go a few more times and try my luck. Hope everybody's having fun! I know I had a blast this season, even though I've had a bad year. Good luck fellas! Be SAFE!

RE: Team 10 Thread
Well boys, I uped my score this morning on that ole tom that gave me the slip on Monday. I roosted him last night onan oak flat and slipped in this morning and set up on him. He didn't gobble much and I just gave him a few soft yelps. We played cat and mouse for about 30 minutes after he flew down and he just couldn't take it any more. I shot him at 14 steps, I was enjoying the show. 24 1/2 lbs, 10 1/4 inch beard, and 1 inch spurs. Can't hunt now until next Monday.

RE: Team 10 Thread
Well, the second day I got it done! This is my very first turkey, and I did it with the bow.
Here's the story. Opening day got my BIL and myself in the blind at his farm at 4:45AM. About 5AM the gobbles started, we could hear about 3 toms, one close and the other two a good couple hundred yards away. At light we saw the Tom come down from roost and land, it seemed like 45yards, but later after being outside the blind it was more like 30 yards, very deceiving in the early morning inside ethe blind. Anyway, this was not a good direction because the birds were not supposed to come from that direction so I only had a peek window, not a shooting window open. I had hoped he would come out and around about 90 degrees to a shooting window, but he never did. Nine hens took him out past the other blind and into the field,(note to self, let's go in the blind tomorrow!) We tried a couple different areas for the rest of the day, saw some henned up toms and a couple lone hens came within range, but no shots. On to the next day, Thursday. WE set up in the other blind, that we cleared and opened a couple windows in for the bow. Normally my BIL and nephew only hunt with shotgun, so they only open the windows a crack. Same thing, we sneak into the blind in the dark and get set. We busted out a deer that crashed through the woods on the way in, not good, lots of noise. Thursday AM, no gobbles, an hour goes by with NO turkey sound. Finally, we get a gobble, not real close, but good. He gobbles 3 times and shut up. It's plenty light and I look out the back of the blind and see TOm on the ground with a couple hens. Never heard them come off roost. I see and hear a couple more hens come down and he is strutting his stuff. My BIL sees them so i just stay at the ready out in front(the only way I planned to shoot because of the underbrush). It took the birds about 45 minutes and then BIL announces that a hen is in the field. Sure enough, she comes walking the field edge(15 yards) towards us, then another, and another, and another. 5 hens are now in front when BIL says here he comes, get ready. I drew back and peek around the corner of the window at full draw. There he comes all fanned out. Basically doing circles and never stopping at all. I take the shot at 15 yards and he flops around about 3-4 feet in the air a few times and feathers are everywhere. My BIL gets out and runs him down. Pretty comical actually, he catches up with the tom and kicks it flipping and steps on it, out of breath. I get over to him and we do the handshake, out of breath coughing(he just quit smoking). He lets the toms head up and taps it when, all of a sudden, the bird gets up and runs, fast! Back into the woods, under the fence, BIL catches up to it, grabs a big stick, goes to hit it, gone again, the chase is on!! Through 50 yards of woods under another fence, across the road, through the ditch, tries to go under another fence, hits the barbs, turns and tries to hide under a pine tree. Now we are both out of breath, but can easily get the bird. This time it does not get up. LAter on I look where I hit it and he must have turned towards me right at the shot and it went in at the shoulder and came out the offside wing. THe arrow never wenet into the chest at all. He probably would have made it if we did not run it down. It sure makes for a good story on my first turkey ever! Hope the picture works. Dandbuck ![]() 21 1/2 pounds, short rounded spurs at 5/8 and 11/16, singel beard was 9 1/8", I think the comes to 52.875, not a huge monster, but my first! |

RE: Team 10 Thread
WOW yall are really puttin a hurtin on these birds! Congrats to everybody, nice turkeys! Sorry I wasn't able to put more on the board, as I think today was the last day I'll get to go.......finals start next week. Had a bird gobble for an hour in a food plot about 150 yards from me this morning. I couldnt see him because I woulda been in plain sight of him, so I set up and tried to call him down a road at the field edge. Didn't call much at all though so I know I didnt hang him up. Something was telling me he wasn't gonna come until later, so in a last ditch effort I gobbled at him 3 or 4 times to see if that would piss him off enough. Nothing happened so I went to truck and ate some beanie weenies and think, then decided to just drive down there to see how many were there, then I would go after em tomorrow. Got down there and it was 3 little old jakes not even taller than my knee, I had worked a jake for an hour thinking he was a better bird.....he sure had a nice gobble on him. Not too great of a year for me. Most of my birds stayed down in the hollows off the power line and were almost impossible to get to early, they never wanted to play and when they did they made me look stupid flanking me every way possible, no birds in the fields til right now when I have to be studying, one of those years I reckon.....it happens. BUT at least I was able to get one, and I'm happy with him. Things look good for us now though! Keep bustin em guys, and it's been fun!

NEW LEADERS!

RE: Team 10 Thread
My buddy brought his son in from Oklahoma over the weekend to hunt. I took them to my honey hole. His 11 year old son killed a triple bearded tom. The 3 beards were like 10 1/2, 9, and 7. He weighed 19 lbs and had 1 inch spurs. He is doing a full body mount for his son. I will post a picture later.
I can hunt again in the morning, will try to up my score but it might be tuff. Good luck guys and lets stay on top where we belong. |
RE: Team 10 Thread
Went out this morning, heard no gobbling, pouring down rain, and I have the worst tooth ache ever. Set up on the edge of a small field and had 7 hens pitch it. Not one gobbler to be seen. However this bearded hen walked in to 18 steps and with the weather conditions, the gobbling activity and me getting ready to havea tooth pulled I finished my season with this 12 lb hen with a 7 1/2 inch beard.

RE: Team 10 Thread
Nice DTC! How many birds is that for you this year?
I can buy another tag for the May20-24 season, just don't know if i can put in the time with all I have to do around the house. i do want to get out there more though, because this turkey hunting just seemed too easy for some reason, it has to be harder than that. Plus I figured i would get busted drawing back my bow or something. I may just have to buy a tag anyway I guess. Later \Dandbuck |
RE: Team 10 Thread
Well guys sorry I havent checked in for awhile. My season is not going so good so far, I have been out a few times with no luck! I am having a hard time getting on the birds, but I still have plenty of season left.......actually hardly anybody from my area is having any luck gettin on the gobblers before they get all henned up for the whole morning!!
I will hopefully have an update within the next couple weeks with a bird on the ground!! Congrats to everyone who has been putting the birds down, and for those that havent yet Gd Luck!!! |
RE: Team 10 Thread
It'll happen. I thought about it for a little while and decided to buy another tag. So the end of MAy I will be out again. The landowner wehre i bow hunt has some turkeys and so i will see about going there. I also know a couple spots where the birds have been that you can not shoot a gun inthe city limits, i may try to get a permit to go there.
Good Luck all! Dandbuck |
RE: Team 10 Thread
My season is done! I wish I could bring more to the table! I want that first place!!! We are so close!!!

RE: Team 10 Thread
DTC.....you are the man! 4 great birds down, nice job this season man! I know a thing or two about those greasy wet gobblers, haha. Don't make good pictures, but they sure are easier to mess with when you're cleaning em. I'm gonna sneak off to go ONE more time Thursday morning, the last day of the season here in Alabama. I saw some birds in a couple of our fields the other day so I'm gonna make the drive and give it a shot.
