Default Proper Elevation Scope Rings?

I just purchased a Marlin XL-7 rifle and need to mount a scope. The rifle came with two weaver scope mounts. I plan to attach a Bushnell Banner Dusk & Dawn with a 40 MM aperture. I am using this model scope with see-through rings on other rifles and am pleased, especially given the lower scope cost.

I was told that medium rings with 40 MM on this gun are fine. Though I wonder, should I play it safe and use higher rings? If I do get a 50 MM scope, will a medium elevation scope rings work? Any recommendationson a manufacturer? Millett, B-Square? Thx.
