RE: What scope for a Marlin XLR 45/70
I replaced my 4x with a 2-7x on my marlin .30-30, it looks perfect and is the perfect size IMO.
If you really dont want over 5x.......unless thats for fixed only, personally id get a variable.....and if 5x is the max
get like a 1.5-5x

I've gotten excellent service from leupold fixed power scopes, still have my first leupold, an M8 and its seen duty on a variety of rifles. It has sat on top of my win 94 3030 in recent years but is the one we pull for troubleshooting optical or rifle issues...rock solid little scope. I have limited hands on with the FXII's but they appear to have a good following as well.
Zeiss Conquest line has4x32 fixed& vairable 1.8x5.5x38 (seen it advertised online for 399.00). No experience witheither of these modelsbut I have had excellent service from others in the Conquest line up.
Khales, etc if your budget is open

RE: What scope for a Marlin XLR 45/70
So far in my very careful methodical research I have narrowed it down to these scopes
[ul][*]Trijicon Accupoint with the dot reticlel 1.25-4(I love this scope)[*]Bushnell 4200 1.25-4[*]Sightron Big Sky 1.5-5[*]Leupold VX-III 1.5-5[*]Meopta low powered scope[*]S&B low powered scopes lit reticle[*]Kahles low powered scope lit reticle[*]IOR[/ul]
In my research I found out that the new Leupold 30 EUROPEAN scope the 1.5-5 or whatever power is using VX-1 Glass and costs as much or more then the ones I have listed with the exception of the last 4. At some point I have to consider the added benefits of the last 4 vs the price. I don't mind paying xtra money for guns or optics but on a gun that will proably be used at the most medium range I think choosing 1-4 might be more practical although door Number 1 is really a very nice scope.

Boy, that's a wide array of choices. The S & B's are great. Love the flashdot but they are very $. I like Kahles CSX and Meopta also...alot. IOR's have a good following and supposedly great glass, but I've never seen one up close. Valuewise, the Big Sky or 4200 are probably sound choices. The Trijicon may be a sleeper. Their new reticle choices are superior (IMO) to the old triangle. It has good glass and illuminates without batteries. That just may be the ticket to success. If it were my choice I believe I may try the Trijicon.

I would rather replace the lamp in the Accupoint every I think 10 years for 75 bucks then a endless suppy of hearing aid batteries for the others. I think the Accupoint works better in both full light and twilight then the others except probably the German/Austrian contingent but they are 3 x the price in most cases.
