Ignore the "vents". In single shot situations, ported barrels do little if anything. They may help in wingshooting or situations when you're making fast follow-up shots...but I stress maybe.

I've shot thousands of clays with ported and non-ported barrels....can't really tell the difference.

Find a gun mounts fast, points well for you, and fits you. Forget about the ports. If they come with gun, OK. If not, don't worry about them.

if i were you i'd just go with the remington 870 12 gauge. a reliable jack of all trades gun that will serve you well enough for the time being.

I really liked the savage arms. This is going to be a really stupid question...never bought any of this stuff but do i have to buy a special barrel if the gun does not come with chokes. I knowhow chokes work but dont know when it comes to buying them and attaching them to barrels. i really want to just buy one gun that i can use on both turkey and whitetails. my dad keeps telling me...go with 870...but the one i have found does not come with chokes or vented barrel so dont know if i have to buy them by the singles. i guess i just want to buy something that comes with everything so i dont have to do any running around or ordering....
Then buy either a remmy 870 or mossberg 500. You can shoot "rifled slugs" out of a smoothbore. Although your accuracy will not be as good as if you bought a rifled barrel. So either buy one of those shotguns with a smoothbore only barrel. Or buy one as a combo package that comes with both a smooth and a rifled barrel...

Right here's an 870 combo with a cantilever rifled barrel. That allows you to have your smoothbore for turkey, small game, etc... and a rifled, scoped barrel for deer.

Here is the mosserg 500 version.

Either of these shotguns fills your need completely. OR if you only want one barrel, just buy one with a smoothbore barrel. It'll be a little cheaper, and your accuracy will be a little less. But it'll be functional.
