While there's several brands of excellent air rifles, gamo seems to be 1 of the better buys for the money. I would also reccomend shooting a heavier pellet for better downrange penetration/energy,and the heavier pellets seem to shoot a bit more accurate as compared to the lightweight "speed" pellets.

Research and buy here. For hunting i would recomend a 22 cal. rather than a .17. RWS is always a good brand but they're a little expensive. I would take a look at the rugers too they have a nice one with a thumbhole stock.
Good Luck

The Benjamin Discovery is getting pretty popular.

I have the daisy powerline 1000s from wal-mart.Came with a 3x9-40 scope and itonly cost $100 and I can shoot dime size groups at 20 yards... I know they're better rifles and such out there but no more than I air rifle hunt its perfect. Now IfI seriously got into it I would probably go with the RWS...

Go online to Cabelas website. You can get 'refurbished Gamos and RWSs' for about half the going price. Mine shoot excellent. I bought a Gamo Hunter 220. Then go to the Charliedatuna.com website. He explains everything you ever needed to know about springer pellet rifles. He recommends a midweight pellet based on gun speed. Spend $30 on one of his triggers, dial in the gun but pay attention to the scope. Springer guns are hell on scopes and it takes serious tourque to keep one in place. May have to upgrade scope mounts for another $15. Mine will kill squirrels out to about 30 yds. or so.

Or you could go the route of a .22 and just buy him CB/BB ammo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.22_CB). 700 fps and way quieter than an air gun. Then he would have something he could grow into...
