Default Shotgun for Hog

My cousin wants to go hog hunting during small game season on wma's. Right now the only firearm he owns and can useis a Mossberg 500 12ga. The Georgiaregulations state the following for small game season:

Shotguns: Any having shot shell size 3.5
inches or smaller in length with No. 2 or
smaller shot.

My question is this - If he uses #2 shot will that be OK for hog hunting (as in will it kill them?) He is planning on using #2 Hevi-Shot 3inch Magnums with a Carlson's Hevi-Shot dead coyote choke tube. Surely Hevi-Shot #2 on a hog with a head-shot would kill it. Hevi-Shot makes a #2 in Steel and Non-Steel - which would you use?

Has anyone ever killed a hog with #2 shot on a WMA? He would use a rifle, but due to acouple of reasons he can't etc... So shotgun is his only hope.

What are your thoughts - if anyone has a pic of a hog shot with #2 that would be a plus to see as well.

*NOTE* that a shotgun is the only option he has right now due to health reasons.[:@]

Thanks in advance for any input.

That is a bit odd that the state will only allow #2 or smaller shot for hunting animals, birds sure, I can see them limiting the shot size. The shot will kill a hog but your going to need to be close to do it. I think most people using a shotgun for game would use slugs or buck shot, I would. I think you should double check the regulations or better yet call F&G and ask them directly.

I just copied this from the Georgia F&G web page.

LEGAL FIREARMS &
ARCHERY EQUIPMENT
ARCHERY:
Longbows, recurve bows, and
compound bows are allowed for hunting any
game or feral hog.
Crossbows are allowed
for hunting feral hog and any game except
waterfowl. Arrows for hunting deer, bear or
feral hog must be broadhead type.
CONVICTED FELONS
may not possess any
firearm while hunting unless that individual"s right
to carry has been restored (OCGA 16-11-131).
This does not apply to archery equipment.
DEER & BEAR FIREARMS
: Modern Rifles
and Handguns
: Centerfire Only, .22-cal. or larger
with expanding bullets.
Shotguns
: 20-gauge or larger loaded with slugs
or buckshot. Buckshot is not allowed on WMAs,
unless otherwise specified.
Muzzleloaders:
.44-cal. or larger, or
muzzleloading shotguns 20 gauge or larger.
Scopes are legal.
Primitive Weapons:
Legal weapons during
primitive weapons season include crossbows,
bow and arrow, and muzzleloading firearm.
Scopes are legal.
TURKEY FIREARMS:
Shotguns with No. 2 or
smaller shot and any muzzleloading firearm.
FERAL HOG FIREARMS:
Any deer, bear,
turkey or small game firearms.
SMALL GAME & FURBEARER FIREARMS:
Rifles and Handguns:
Any .22-cal. or smaller
rimfire, air rifle, or any muzzleloading firearm.
Shotguns
: Any having shot shell size 3.5
inches or smaller in length with No. 2 or
smaller shot.
Shotguns (Waterfowl):
Any 10-gauge or
smaller loaded with federally approved nontoxic
shot of size "F" or smaller. Lead shot may not be
in possession while hunting waterfowl.
SPECIAL FIREARM RESTRICTIONS:
Plugged Shotguns:
Shotguns must be
plugged to a maximum capacity of 3 shells
(magazine and chamber combined) except for
deer, bear & feral hog hunting. For deer, bear
& feral hog hunting, shotguns are limited to 5
shells. Plugs must be one piece and incapable
of being removed through the loading end of
the magazine.

Looks like the #2 shot restriction applies to turkey hunting only, but I did notice that they don't allow buckshot when hunting the WMA,s unless specificaly allowed, so I would sugest your buddy buy a couple of different brands of slugs and shoot them to see which shoots best and then go clobber some hogs.

Default RE: Shotgun for Hog

In Georgia we are not allowed to use anything larger than #2 in a shotgunwhen hunting small game (during a small game hunt). When you look deeperin the WMA specific regulations it breaks it down more stating that during small game season huntsall small game arms allowed - nothing larger.

SMALL GAME & FURBEARER FIREARMS:Rifles and Handguns: Any .22-cal. or smallerrimfire, air rifle, or any muzzleloading firearm.Shotguns: Any having shot shell size 3.5inches or smaller in length with No. 2 orsmaller shot.

All my cousin has to hunt with is the 12ga. and they will not allow anything larger than #2 on WMA during small game season - so we are stuck with Hevi-Shot #2. He would use a rifle or muzzleloader, but for other reasons he can't at this time. So #2 is going to have to work...I Hope....[&o]

The only thing I could suggest is to hunt them not at same time as small game. Is small game season on wmas the ONLY time he could hunt hogs?

The only way I would try to shoot a hog with #2 birdshot is in the head and at very close range.

If you pop a hog right where he would have an earring, no. 2 shot will drop them stright down. I would suggest you be at the farthest away 25 yds, and with a turkey choke.

Your state has some pretty stupid laws there. Sorry.

Sounds like a great chance to use a smokepole if you have one. A .50cal conical or sabot slug being pushed by 100gr of powder would put any hog down pretty certainly.

Like I said, a no.2 shot within 25 yards will powder a hog, as long as you put it under his ear.
