.45-70 ballistics???
Hearing that .45-70 BP buffalo guns throw 500 gr doorknobsin competition shoots @ 1000 -1500 yds. HOW??? BP sabots not even close and my .30-06 w scope can barely do that! I consistently hit chucks @ 500 yds and drop 150 gr spitzers in their laps @ 700 - 1000+ yds - 9x scope.
I recognize that .45-70 has big slug and powder charge retains lots momentum and may have efficient BC and has ultra accurate appature sight and calibrated elevation BUT front sight would cover the vitals of a SCHoolBUS! so how in hell could it out shoot a .30-06 and way farther than PRB or inlines??? thanks

RE: .45-70 ballistics???
It is very simple. Practice, and knowing you firearm. There areBP rifles that will do the same thing. For example the Gibb's or Whitworth rifle is used to 1,000 yards.
The large bullet has something to do with it in the 45-70. But your 30-06 is very capable at the same range(and farther) if it is in the hands of a RIFLEMAN who knows how to use it. Tom.

RE: .45-70 ballistics???
Had a buddy that used a 45-70 to shoot coyotes from his garage window. Vernier tang sight, range 365 yards, very good accuracy, but............ with the rainbow trajectory it was only good for that exact range (he had a deer carcass pile there).
I used to have a 45-70 pistol barrel for a contender I owned. I scoped it and at 100 yards could hit a pop can every shot if I did my part. Back then they weren't legal for deer hunting, so I finally traded it off. Nor they're legal........... what's the old saying about hindsight being 20/20.........[:@]And with a 350 grain bullet and 45 to 50 grains IMR4198 you didn't have to look at the primer to see if the firing pin hit.
