Hey Guys.
Alright...I'm thinking of switching from a crossbow to a compound....what do you all use and what do they cost? I don't want to spend a bundle but I could go around $450. Any advice would be great!

Don't fall victom to the this "FPS!!! FPS!!!! MY KINGDOM FOR 10FPS!!!" mentality. Any bow made within 5 years will have plenty of power and shoot flat enough. I'd suggest going into the used market. Buy something that someone with the FPS syndrome traded in after one season of hunting. Mathews, Hoyt, Bowtech, Parker, PSE...these are the big names that come to mind. None of them put there name on junk (execpt for some low low end PSE's) and should be safe purchases. Learn/know that longer ATA and taller brace heights will be more forgiving and make an inherently more accurate bow. Proper tuning is a most for an accurate bow. I would also stay away from overdraws...for a beginner I don't feel there a good idea. They, in one sense, bring the brace height to virtually nothing. This usually means a bow that will magnify any mistakes the shooter makes.

For $450 you can get fully set up with a 2004/5 Martin Jaguar Magnum. They run $199.99 at our local shop.

for $450 you can buy a lot different of bows. best thing to do is to go and shoot some and see what you like.

you can get a great deal on a 04 bow that someone bought and is now trading for an 05.

as most people will tell u, u need to go to ur local proshop and shoot a variety of bows. this will narrow your choices down and then u could possibly look for an older model of the top 2-3 bows u liked. if u plan on hunting with the bow i would give a serious look into the WB rest. also i would get a good quality site with bright pins/pin depending on what u go with. throw on some limbsavers(15$) string leeches(8$) peep (5$) release(50$-depending on which one u get) quiver(20-30$)and broadheads (15-35$) and u will be set. if u have the money consider a stabilizer. for hunting i would recommend u get a smaller one. i have the lore deluxe stabilizer and it comes with a sling. i think it is a great buy for the money.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm looking into one of those renegade bows....I'm not sure yet....I'll probably wait until summer and see how I feel then.

Actually the MSR for a bare 2005 Bowtech Tomcat is $499.00. Unless you're buying a used one from someone who is selling a rest, sight, release, and peep for $450.00 you aren't going to find a "package" deal under $500.
