RE: .270 or 30-06?
I used a 30-06 when I was a kid and have always loved them, my daughter is 14 and she has a 30-06 also, I cant get her to set it down for a second. She loves it, but it does have a bit of a kick for a young girl. my nephew has a .270 that doesnt kick nearly as much and its a great gun. But I would rather go with the 30-06. its good for just about anything you will ever hunt in North America, the only thing I would want bigger for would be for brown bear. It really all comes down to what your going to hunt and if the recoil is a concern (which i dought)
Good luck with whatever you choose, im sure you will love it

i would suggest a .270. i love mine and it doesnt have much recoil. as for long lasting, both will last long. a bolt will last the longest though. the 30-.06 has a wider range of bullets, but it comes with a lot of recoil.

I'd say a 30-06,but you MAY be too small framed to handle one,I'm 16 yrs old 6'2 240 pounds and It still kicks! An '06 is my choice,I use a winchester 165 grain pointed soft point and IT WORKS GREAT!As far as recoil My friend, who's 5'6 130 pounds,is 16 and shot my 12gauge and it almost knocked her FLAT,thats with a 2 3/4 inch load,an '06 has about as much recoil as a 3inch turkey load in 12 gauge. She watched me shoot my '06 and told me I was crazy for shooting it.

I talked to an old gunsmith and he recommended something that had never occured to me.
He said to get a caliber and gun that he could use when fully grown.
what he suggested I went with, we bought a remington model 700 in .270
He ordered a moderately priced extra youth stock and down loaded hand loads so the recoil was much lighter.
My son used the gun set up that way until he was 15, we then put on the origional factory stock and he went to factory ammo.
It worked out great, he is mow 33 and has an 8 year old son that he plans on giving it to to use as he did.
Most any caliber would be good, you could even use a 300 win mag if you wanted to and do as I did with the youth stock and down loaded ammo.
Hope this helps

For anything around the size of a mule deer or smaller, definitely a 270. It uses the same load as the 30-06, just a smaller bullet diameter. The 270 is flatter shooting, and packs plenty of punch for about anything.
