a 270 is plenty for deer moose and elk. plus recoil. i think a 270 would be better suited to your body size right now. I'm 6.2" 180 and 30 06 will knock me around easy and i shoot trap competivly so ill take several hundered 12 gauge rounds a day. (given they are target rounds, but still 300 12gauge rounds within a couple hours aint to shaby)

VA HEAD HUNTER

7 mags are nice but the bullet drops too fast and they blow holes the size of hubcaps in deer. but its the only thing i take bear hunting.
your kidding right. a 7mm mag has the least drop of a 270 and 30 06. compairing 150gr bullets all the way around. but your right it sure does have alot of knock down power.

I'd go with the 30-06, I'm 15 5'10, 200 pounds and I've shot hot handloaded .35 Whelen bullets and the recoil didn't bother me at all.

The .308 winchester. It's the 30-06 case but shortened so there's reduced recoil. No problem buying ammo in out-of-the-way places if needed and inexpensive military ammo can be bought for target practice purposes. It will knock down anything in North America (shot placement is the key) and most of Africa too.

For moose hunting I would definitely choose the 30-06, but for deer they would both work fine. (I would still chose the 30-06).
Savage makes some very nice 30-06 guns if you are looking at a gun that isn't too expensive. The remington 700 ADL is also good, but stay away from the remington 710... it sucks!!!

I think you may have missed my point, you can use ANY cartridge and caliber you like. Just download until the recoil fits you.
You can load 30-06 to shoot like .22mags and squirrel hunt with it.

You can use a 338 win mag and down load until the recoil is suitable and still have plenty of knock down power.
As you develope you can change the loads to fit your size.
Any good hand loader will have the books to correctly load what you require, and can load the shells for you.

Hope this helps.
