I remember in my freshman year of college, we'd get so bored in statistics that we'd look at the hotornot.com website the whole hour and half. I don't think there's anything more gross about that than asking people what their opinion is. I mean, it's pretty much the same thing, an opinion poll.

And when my buddies say "yeah she's hot" they aren't talking about how cool some girl is.
