How young/How old

Another thread got me thinking about my own daughter and when I should start introducing her to a firearm.

I started her out at 3 with a bow and a target block this past summer, which she seemed to take to rather well but her general coordination was a bit off (she was 3, I wasn't expecting Robin Hood). Since then she's had a growing interest with target shooting and I'm wondering if 4 years old would be too early to start her with a BB gun. Or should I hold off on the gun for another year and get her a youth bow? The one she's using right now is her cousin's.

What are your general thoughts?

That a your own personal preference brother. I had mine shooting a 22 at 5 with me with them of course. It all depends on the maturity level of the kid. I think with supervision your never to young.

'pends on the kid. If supervised, 4 is not too young for a BB gun.

It's FREAKIN' GREAT to get the youngsters involved.

And it's even better for them to want and decide to stick with it past their teenage years.

You're off to a fantastic start.

Congratulations and commendations :)

Thanks for the replies :) I decided that I'm going to hold off on the BB gun this year and let her focus on her bow skills for now. I just have to figure out which one! lol

I got my first bow when I was three and my first BB gun the next year. As for what kind of BB gun, its really hard to beat the Daisy Red Rider. I've had mine for 20 years and still shoot it when I feel like poppin some cans.

Our oldest daughter, who just turned six in October has been shooting a bow for a year now. We bought her one of those child bows and had some decent arrows made.

She has also been shooting .22 single shot rifle. She also accompanies us on hunts. (My husband and I always hunt together.)

Our daughters are VERY obedient and very attentive to our instructions.

my dad got me started shootin the .22 when I was 5. we would bring it with us deer huntin (I obiosly was not shootin deer back then, my dad took me so I would become familiar with the woods). and after we got done deer huntin he would teach me how to shoot targets. that old gun is mine now and those are memories I will never forget.
