Benelli sucks.

;)
This is from this past week, the snow geese and ducks are from Friday evening-Sunday morning. We killed the snow geese yesterday (Saturday) morning. We saw a lot flying over, and getting lower as they crossed the levee to the west of us. So my dad and I decided to go back to the cabin, grab something to eat, and then go for a drive looking for where these snow geese were landing. We knew we could get them as long as there was a ditch close enough to them, and because we have permission to kill them in literally tens of thousands of acres in these bottoms. It turns out they were only a couple miles over the levee, and there was probably 15-20 thousand of them in the air and on the ground in a rice field, only about 60 yards from a ditch. So we went back and got my brother who was still duck hunting, grabbed the guns, and hopped in the truck. We drove about a mile past the geese, and grabbed the guns. We crouched a mile through a muddy, water filled ditch (very hard on you and the guns), went to peek over the top of the ditch to see how far, and if we thought we could kill as much as we wanted, and I guess we peeked a little too high because they all got up off the ground about 60 yards from us. So we jumped up from the ditch and started shooting, we ended up with 15 in 9 shots. Not great, not bad. The sneak to them was rough, but the walk back with our guns, and 5 geese each was much harder. We did it, and then went back to the cabin and got a trail camera up and a stand hung for next weekend. As we were driving through the bottoms again this morning, on our way home, there were even more geese, all within reach of a ditch too. We'd had enough though lol. The last pictures are from Wednesday, in a muddy cornfield with steady rain/snow/sleet the whole time we were there.

You guys seem to think this is a lot. We've killed in the 40's with one stalk before:D. It'll get better when everything is closed except snow geese and we can take the plugs out of our guns. That's when it really becomes work;).
Thanks guys

Lol ya it's a joke. Some people in here were saying stuff about them. I was shooting a Stoeger 2000, my brother a Franchi I-12, and my dad an older Benelli he has.

Nah, I'm sure if we would have had binocs and looked we could have found some neck collars. My brother killed a banded mallard at one of the farms last weekend.

I guess I'll update this. This is me and my friend, we hunted Saturday evening for a while, and didn't call the shot on mallards when we should have, but we decoyed 6 geese (still should have killed at least 3 of them, but it was fun). We're stalking some more this weekend while my brother deer hunts, my dads filming us do it. Should be a blast, I'll post it:).
Can you say face shot[:-]

You are just the duck slayer!

I'm getting more and more interested in bird hunting (upland). Sometimes I wonder why I don't do it more often.

That's how I was with waterfowl hunting. It was too easy for a while (it's even easier for me now that I'm a much better shot[&:]), but I didn't duck hunt once last year. Just killed a Canada about 5 minutes from my house in a corn field. Now I'm really into it again.

yea i love quail and chuckar hunting, and check this out... the guy we bought our farm from is a bird dog trainer and had our land registered as a liscenced game preserve, so everytime we want to hunt no matter what time of year, we just call him up (he now owns land right next to us) and he will put out however many birds we want and also what type, its awesome!

RE: Benelli sucks.

Well this weekend was fun. Great conditions for the geese, foggy and rainy, with a very low ceiling. We decoyed a flock of about 15 specks (me, my dad, and my friend) and shot at about 40 because they were probably going to flare after they circled one more time. Then we had somewhere in between 1000-2000 snows fly over us, and we waited for the right part of the flock, they flew over us at about 25 yards[8D]. We killed 3 out of that. Then the fog lifted and the day was pretty much over, so we got some work done on the farms. What a great time for only killing 4 birds though:).

RE: Benelli sucks.

I can see why a lot of people like goose hunting, but geese are way too slow and easy to kill. I love ducks a whole lot better because they are harder to kill, much faster, and IMO theres no bigger rush than watching a wad of ducks buzz your spread and commit.

Any kind of waterfowl hunting down here is EXTREMELY tough and expensive... most hunters down here hunt deer, turkey, coon and rabbit. You'll be amazed at how many duck hunters don't know what the hell they are doing. I'd say about a third of all mornings are interrupted by people fishing, hiking, or rubberheads barreling past your spread 5 minutes before shooting time flushing your birds up

That being said, I LOVE a challenge. Deer hunting is way to easy for me. Waterfowl on the other hand takes persistance, stamina, patience, and is much more strategic. This year, I've only killed 2 greenwing teal, 2 bluewing teal, 4 woodies, 4 geese, and ringer. Another 5 ducks weren't able to be retrieved. Theres nothing I hatemore than not finding your bird.

RE: Benelli sucks.

Chris, where I hunt, ducks are much easier to kill. I also think that decoying geese is much more of a rush than decoying ducks. To me on my scale of rush (:D) ducks are closer to doves, and geese are closer to turkeys. Obviously personal preference. I'll second you on not being able to find birds. It's nothing short of amazing how they can dive in a foot of water, and you never find them:eek:

Chris_H 01-04-2009 05:46 PM

RE: Benelli sucks.

YeahRory that almost happened during early teal season. One of the bluewings that I shot dove in 6 inches of water and I couldn't see under the water because of the glare of the sun. It wasn't until I saw his the white on his speculum when I dove and picked him up. One of the greater reasons for unretrieved birds is not owning a dog. We almost didn't retrieve the two ringers because the mud was so soft, you'd sink 4 feet into the mud but only be in a foot of water. My buddy ended up literally swimming out there likea dog to get those ducks. Another woodie I shot this year fell into head high marsh grass, and we never found it either. I remember SwampCollie telling me that he'd never lost so many birds in his life while hunting in SC.
