RE: somethin clean for a change

story i posted back in november

I was very excited to get to hunt my dads friends farm all week. there had been 4 good bucks killed off of it this year so far, but plenty more running around. the farm is in the bootheel of missouri and border otter slough conservation area (it has about 10 deer hunters each year, so its basically a 6000 acre refuge). what the deer do is feed in the fields of otter slough in the nights, and a soon as the shooting from duck hunters starts in otter slough, the deer head straight to the blocks of woods. but my dad dropped me off at the stand i was hunting around 5:50, and about 5 minutes after he left i could hear deer walking of my right shoulder in some brush, it was too dark still to make out a deer. as soon as it was light enough to see a deer, i saw 4 does walking in the brush to my right, really had no shot opportunities. it was a great start, about 15 minutes into the hunt i had already seen 4 deer. then about 10 minutes after i the does i had a doe swim through the swamps that was 40 yards in front of my stand, i could have nailed her, but it was early and there were some bruisers running the woods where i was, so i passed on her. following her i had a yearling, either a button buck or a doe, passed it too. then at about 6:35 i saw movement in thick stuff to my left. after looking at it i saw antlers on it and immediately thought it was a shooter. he walked along the levee i was on and i thought i wouldnt get a shot, but then he turned and got up on the levee with me and i was ready, but when i stopped him, he turned completely towards me, and i noticed he was very wide. after about 30 seconds of him standing motionless trying to figure out what made the noise, he turned broadside and started walking. i stopped him again, he was about 65 yards away and i squeezed the trigger with the crosshairs on the center of the body, right behind the shoulder. after the shot the deer ran off with his tail down and got real low and ran out of my sight. i immediately called my dad to go check the blood. after i called him i called my best friend. they were both very happy for me. after about 15 minutes my dad and brother arrived from out of the two man stand they were hunting. we immediately found blood and it was red with bubbles in it, we knew this deer was dead. after about 45 yards of a blood trail we saw the antlers sticking up out of the brush. while my dad went back to get the camera from the truck i looked to my right up the ditch and noticed a huge puddle of blood. the buck tried to get out of the ditch he was in, but never made it out. hes my best buck by far and he wont score much but im very happy with him. the .308 sure did the trick.

Sorry no pictures, our friend who took them hasn't gotten them up yet.

2 Years ago I went out hunting with my grandpa and as we were walking to my stand I looked up and there was a, what it looked like,a doe. I had a doe tag so I slowly, very very very slowly, kreeped forward while the deer was eating, It took about 5 minutes before I acually got to a spot to shoot, I pulled back and shot..missed..it went right under it and it ran about 15 yards and then stopped and looked around, It looked at my a few times but as scared as I was I was frozen solid. The deer went back to eat and I slowly started kreeping forward this time I got a litte slower and shot it and it hit exacually in the heart and it ran 10 yards and dropped. I was so happy, once it dropped I knew it was over. I ran to my deer to retreive it and found out it was a small button buck. But it was my first deer and im happy for it. No matter the size.

this was a couple years Ago but by far one of the best trips up to camp. i didnt shoot this buck but my dad did on the last day. the story w/ the first pic is....thanksgiving day, always a good day for us for some reason, anyways it was pooring cats and dogs, i already had my deer but was helpin my father get a good buck so he wouldnt have to dig out his smokepole. he sat up in a saddle on the top of johnson mt where usually after tracking a buck up there for a few hours they always seemed to cross that saddle when they were trying to shake ya. at daylight i found a good buck track in the loggin road w/ a big doe. tracking in the rain is almost as good as 8" of fresh snow so i had high hopes that i could put a buck up over the mt eventually. hours passed and i jumped them a couple times bnut before they headed for the gut the buck branched off and left the doe. she went up through at about 100mph when i jumnped her the last time. i hollard "watchem" and heard him fire.......i didnt kjnow at this point that the buck gave me the slip anyways he missed her, she was probably 150 160lbs he guessed and thanksgiving day he was gonna take her. he let one rip on her neck but no connection. walkin back to the truck i thought that was a cool pic all depress and soak-n-wet. the botom pic was 2 days later, (the last day) the rain turned to snow and made for good tracking. if any of you have tracked up in the north you know what double teaming is, for those that dont know its when two guys track the same deer. the guy in the front (which would be me on this day) does the tracking and the guy in the back is the shooter. you can go much faster this way and see more. basically the guy in the back doesnt need to fallow the tracks and take his eyes off the woods ahead and to the side. its works incredible well after you get the hang of it. we found this bucks track about 8 am pretty close to camp, ide say 15 miles away maybe crossing a cutting. i mean he was really fresh, still snow in the road from his hooves! we got ready and took off we jumped him out once and i saw him go but dad didnt have a shot. when i see him i knew he was 210 215lbs which was def a shooter in my book. @ around 1030 we jumped him once more and he made about 2 bounds and i hit my knees threw my fingers in my ears and dad let two rip. he caught him in the last rib and in the neck beloow the ear w/ a 180gr round nose 30-06. wethe drag was pretty short compared to normal, about 3/4 mile cuz the buck was headed back to cross another rd we knew about. he ended up being a 12 pt w/ double brows and weighing 232. the ol man also won the deer pool at camop which was $100.00 and the deer pool at the tagging station that was $300.00 and he got some tall ass trophy too. which was cool. anyways thats about it but it makes for a good memory
