Mossburg 12 gauge and some beef jerkey. Thats about it. Usually skip the camo too. Don't see the point in trying to outsmart the world's dumbest game bird. Darn thing drowns in a rainstorm
oh ya they cant fly either[:-]

OK, for the doubters out there, maybe if you need all of that fancy equipment and gear just to see a turkeyyou don't know much about hunting and just rely on thousands of dollars worth of equipment.

Let me enlighten you in a story. There were 10 people playing paintball, yelling, jumping around behind trees, and just making a lot of noise in general. A group of turkeys, I guess curious, walked in to see what was going on. They just sat there. I wasn't aware paintball guns doubled as turkey calls.

Another one, I have horses. The turkeys are constantly there waiting for a free handout. There's gunshots going off around there all the time with the neighbors always target practicing. You think that scares them away? Nope.

Two years ago we had to have a strip of siding on our house replaced becausea 23lb tom flew into the side of our house. In broad daylight. Not even a window, just hit the house and busted his neck. Didn't waste him, he tasted good. Made some nice fans from his wings too.

We have so many of them here, they're practically a nuisance. They cross the road in groups of 10 or more and just stand there looking at your car. If you pull over to let them go by, they take their sweet time about it and walk slowly to the shoulder of the road where they then continue to pick and see what they can scrounge.

A few times we've had to throw sheets over the ones that got their heads stuck in our fences to try to free them. It wasn't even worth it since we walked away more bruised and battered then they did.

And I'm no kid rory, I've got quite a few years on you and have been hunting much longer. I know their patterns, I know where they travel and at what time of day they'll be there. All I have to do is prop myself up behind the stone wall with a green hat on. Then BOOM. I've got a turkey. Don't believe me? Come hunting out here.

Think about it. What was the traditional hunting dress for years upon years? Red plaid. Long before camo was even thought of, men were hunting in whatever they wore regularly. The camo industry was created more for people to hide from eachother, the hunting world just figured out a way to profit from it. I'm not saying its not fun to go out there in camo, I'm just saying its not needed. At all. For any animal. I've gone deer hunting in jeans and a t-shirt and been sucessful. Never used a scent or coverscent in my life, never bought rattlers or calls or anything. I just know what to look for and where to be at the right time.

Wow there girl, were talking about WILD turkeys...not the tame pets mentioned above...I have a group of turkeys I hunted when I was really young, and they were just like the ones you descibed...I killed one while wearing a t shirt too....I've found that different groups of turkeys can produce different levels of difficulty....We have tons of turkeys here too....atleast 150 in the group I watched yesterday.

They can become accoustomed to human activity after a while...This is something that happens with overpopulation...its happened here and it sounds like its happened where your at

I guess if you wanted to do things the "traditional" way you should just put a sharp rock on the end of a stick and see how many gobblers you get that way

Theres no need to tell someone they dont know how to hunt just because they wear camo....and if you really believe that then Im gonna guess you'll have quiet an argument on your hand there...good luck with that..I dont think your odds will be very good

youve never heard those?
people think that turkeys cant fly, and that they drown in rainstorms?

thats why we have so many turkeys that are dead after a good rain, and thats why turkeys roost high up in hardwoods, because they cant fly:D;)

RE: What does everybodys turkey equitment consist of ???

Misquoting me up there I see. I never said you that you couldn't use it. I was implying that you couldn't hunt without it. I wear camo. I enjoy wearing camo. But camo was actually first mentioned in history in Shakespear's Macbeth for the purpose of waging war (And the trees moved in the night), and again with the Medieval Scots using Ghillie to protect the King's property from poachers. Again, against humans. Camo was invented for war. Its not necessary for hunting. People survived for millions of years without it. Just like they were sucessful at hunting for millions of years without nikon scopes, bipods, or even firearms. Not saying those things don't make it easier, it certainly does, but I don't have the money to spend on all of that and I can get the job done just as well without it.

And to answer your question rory, I've shot 15 toms since I started turkey hunting. That may not sound like a lot to some of you, but I've never shot more than I needed. I happen to eat what I shoot, so I don't feel the need to blow away an entire flock just to prove a point. We also have very strict bag limits here, so not too many birds can be taken per year.

Look, all I'm saying is that camo doesn't float my boat. And yes, the birds I hunt are very wild. I've had my butt handed to me by a few mother hens, and have had quite a few take off when I moved or sneezed. Ya'll can waste all the money you want. I'm fine and dandy doing things the way I was raised. I'm not starving yet [8D]

there are some places where you need camo/alot of equipment to shoot a bird, but any place where turkeys are used to seeing peole i have found camo actually spooks them, it is just like seeing a walking tree thats half human, there are arguments for both sides, you dont necessarily need camo to kill an animal if the anmal is used to people moveing about, but in many cases the camo is a added bonus to your chances of nabbing your prey

WOW! I missed alot yesterday. I wear my camo hunting but ive also killed many animals without it. I cnat afford all the nice things for hunting and high dollar camo but i do get what i can. I have 2 pairs of pants that are about 4 years old and 3 or 4 shirts that are just as old. I shoot a Mossberg 835 i got used for $150.
