7mm Mag
How many use a gun like this to hunt with for Deer?
Do they kick alot? DO you thinkthis is a good gun for 100 yard and under shots? Thanks For any opnoions on this ??? |
RE: 7mm Mag
I use my dads sometimes. It definatly has some recoil, but that doesn't bother me to much. Under 100 yards? I'd say it has to much power under 100 yards. A 7mm mag is very powerful... if you want a good deer gun for under 100yds, get a .270 or .308 because they are both powerful but with less recoil.

RE: 7mm Mag
I use a light 30-06 and it kicks a lot, don't get a 7mm mag, go for a 30-30.

RE: 7mm Mag
7mm has heavy recoil, and is overkill for whitetail shots taken under 100 yards. Others have suggested for you to check into getting a 30-30. I must disagree due to the size of slug (causing significant drop and slow velocity) in a 30-30 cartridge. I would suggest a .243 or possibly a .270 for larger body deer.

RE: 7mm Mag
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the 7mm-08!!!! This is a great caliber (my personal favorite) and many people recognize it as the best deer caliber around! You can't go wrong with this caliber, doesn't kick bad at all, just throw some Winchester Fail Safe's in it once it's sighted in go out and shoot a deer. This gun helped me account for my first buck at a whopping 175 yards (whopping where I hunt) but it does good well under that too. I should know, with both of the deer I shot with it this year (an 8 point on Nov. 2nd and a doe Friday morning) both within 30 yards. The 30-30 is also a great gun for under 100 yards, because even with bullet drop it can still harvest deer out to 150 yards or farther. Hope this helps!
